White Moss House

White Moss House

White Moss House

White Moss House has an outstanding reputation for good food, excellent wines and comfortable accomodation in the very heart of the English Lake District.
Situated at the northern end of beautiful Rydal Water between Grasmere and Windermere, White Moss House was built in 1730 and was once owned by the poet, William Wordsworth, and occupied by Wordsworth's descendants until the 1930s.
Wordsworth's Dove Cottage is a mile's walk away at Grasmere, and his later home, Rydal Mount, just half a mile south along the lake.
Presently owned by Susan and Peter Dixon who, while giving their guests their personal attention, give the same attention to detail that you find at much fancier establishments.
White Moss House is a Grasmere hotel that has just 5 bedrooms in the main house, and Brockstone Cottage up on the hillside "..quiet, beautiful spot with the best view of all right out across Rydal Water" (Alistair Sawday's Special Places to Stay).
White Moss House is the ideal place in the Lake District for a house party. For small groups of friends and families exclusive use of the hotel and restaurant makes this a perfect place for a reunion or celebration.
White Moss House in Grasmere has an international reputation for serving the very best of modern English food. Highly recommended by the Good Food Guide since 1974, and holding AA Rosettes, Chef patron Peter Dixon is described by Bon Appetit Magazine as "an intuitive cook, with a fine grasp of textures and flavours shown in his wonderful five course meals."
Peter is a Master Chef of Great Britain, and he takes pride in using the finest local ingredients available. Free range and organic produce is often used and a traditional English pudding is always offered as one of the wonderful desserts.
For lovers of wine White Moss is heaven. With over 300 bins dating back to 1928, the list is described by the Good Food Guide as "a stunning array...prices range from fair to impressively low."
Awarded AA 2 Red Stars in the Hotel category and AA Inspectors Choice Hotel 2006-7.

St Oswalds Country House
St Oswalds Country House, Grasmere

The house was originally used as a hydrotherapy hospital for the Victorians. They would spend several weeks here "enjoying"the rigors of morning bathes in the cold mountain streams, treks in the rain through the fells and fields and various treatments within the hospital.
You now receive a far more comfortable welcome, a fully central heated house with log fires during the winter in the large lounge/dining room where our guests can relax after long walks on the fells. A large drying room is also available to dry those wet clothes which is often a hazard of our climate.
Private car parking within the grounds.
