Paddling for bats

Bats are a fascinating but often overlooked feature of our local wildlife. As they are known to be attracted to water (well, the insects that you find around water anyway), looking for bats at one of our National Park lakes can be a great idea. We’re offering an opportunity to come and see (and hear) our local bats whilst enjoying a canoeing trip on Windermere, one of Britain’s most iconic lakes. This is a joint event with Westmorland and Furness Bat Group and you will be joined by a local expert who will provide insight and tuition into finding these secretive flying mammals. We’ll meet at Low Wray campsite and, with the help of Quest for Adventure, will set out on the lake at dusk to search for the bats that forage over the water. We’re likely to see or hear at least three species of bat, possibly more. You may also be treated to sightings of other secretive Lakeland wildlife. Although we’ll be paddling canoes, previous experience is not necessary and all comers are welcome, regardless of age and ability. Waterproof top and bottoms, spare warm clothes, food and drink and a suitable head torch (including spare batteries) are essential. Please be aware that this event may be cancelled at short notice due to inclement weather. Early booking is essential as places are strictly limited. Bats of the fells

Bats use a whole variety of habitats in the UK, however a little-known fact is that they have also been recorded high in the Cumbrian hills and even on mountain tops. This event is an unusual chance to come along and see and hear about bats foraging at an upland tarn as high as 550m. This is a joint event with Westmorland and Furness Bat Group. We will walk from the car park above Coniston up to Low Water (Dist. 1.5 miles, Ascent 320m), an hour before sunset and wait for bats to arrive. The route will follow a rough unsurfaced path that is rocky with some steep inclines. We will return via the same path after dark. Although the route will be led by experienced hill walkers, sure footing is essential. Stout boots, waterproof top and bottoms, spare warm clothes, food and drink and a suitable head torch (including spare batteries) are essential. Please be aware that this event may be cancelled at short notice due to inclement weather. Early booking is essential as places are strictly limited. Contact John Dunbavin on 01539 816300 or johnd@cumbriawildlifetrust.org.uk for further details.

Pennine journey in a day sponsored walk
The Wainwright Society, who generously supported us as their designated charity in 2012, have now given us the opportunity to raise funds for the Trust by sponsorship in a ‘Pennine Journey in a Day’ event. Supporters of regional and national charities will all be involved with each walking a part of the journey. This walking marathon will be the main event on the opening day of the North Pennine Walking Festival to be held from 28 September to 6 October to mark the completion of the waymarking of the entire 247 mile route and the 75th anniversary of when Alfred Wainwright started his Pennine Journey in 1938. There will be a mixture of walks and talks throughout the North Pennines AONB. Cumbria Wildlife Trust supporters have been allocated the route from Appleby to Church Brough and you are invited to walk all or part of it i.e. a 10- or 6-mile section. Sponsorship forms and route maps will be available to participants. We hope to be able to provide return transport on the day. There is no entrance fee so all funds raised in sponsorship will be for Cumbria Wildlife Trust. If you would like be involved in walking or stewarding our section then please get in touch with Susan Garnett on 015396 21138 or msg@wardses.org.uk. For more information about the Pennine Journey please visit www.penninejourney.org.uk.
