The day will start indoors learning the key points needed to identify waders, followed by a look around the nature reserve putting your new skills into practice. Bring a packed lunch, binoculars, any ID books if you have them, and appropriate outdoor clothes. As spaces are limited, booking is essential. For those with impaired mobility, a tramper can be booked for use at the event 24 hours ahead of time (so we can charge the battery ready for use). This will help promote the natural regeneration of native broadleaf species such as oak, ash and hazel, which are being out-shaded by the non-native species in some areas of the nature reserve. We’ll also be planting native broadleaf trees in areas where natural regeneration is less certain. Please wear outdoor clothing and bring a packed lunch. 26 January 2013 Sat 10.00am-12.00pm Winter waders on Walney Join us for a walk around Cumbria Wildlife Trust's South Walney Nature Reserve to see the abundance of visiting winter wading birds and wildfowl as well as learn about the historical importance of the area. Please bring binoculars, and warm and waterproof clothing and footwear. The walk is approximately 5km. Children are very welcome but must be able to walk the distance or have someone with them who is happy to carry them. A tramper is available for use by individuals with mobility problems if booked 24 hours ahead of the event, as its battery needs to be charged ready for use. Several of the dry stone walls are in need of repair, and this inaugural work party is needed both to get started on fixing some, and to walk the boundary to assess the condition of the others. Work may include a range of practical tasks including cutting back vegetation, checking on livestock, surveying and maintaining paths and boundaries. 4 April 2013 Thu 7.30pm-9.00pm Features of the West Cumbrian coast: importance of Allonby and the honeycomb worm reefs An animated talk by Emily Miles and Rebecca Hunter from Cumbria Wildlife Trust. They will highlight the geographical and biological importance of the West Cumbrian coastline, providing a background to the honeycomb worm (Sabellaria alveolata) and an insight into the current Sabellaria surveying projects in the area, how the data is used and how you can help protect this unique species. There is limited parking at the church but on-street parking is available. Entry is £2.00 for adults and free for children and includes refreshments. The male’s calls can be heard up to a mile away on a still night! Bring a torch.
