A fund raising event in support of young people by the Brathay Hall Trust. Enter this event and run a full circuit around England’s largest lake to raise money for several charitable trusts. The race is open to all above the age of 18 years.

July 1st - Ambleside Rushbearing
A festival celebration associated with the ancient custom of annually replacing the rushes covering the earth floors of the church which were laid to provide warmth. A procession, led by “Rush Maidens” carrying reeds and sweet smelling grasses, wends its way through the town.

July 24th - Grasmere Rushbearing Ceremony
Prior to the paving of the church floor in 1840, rushes were laid on what were then bare earth floors to provide extra warmth for the congregation. The custom of carrying rushes to the church has survived to become an annual event where a token amount of rushes, carried by six “Rush Maidens,” accompanied by a large procession, are taken to the church. One suitcase can tell a thousand stories…especially when the suitcase belongs to this particular lady. Journey around the world with our well travelled friend as she regales you with tales of fishermen, fairies, feasts and beasts. Using only the contents for her suitcase she creates landscapes of mountains and jungles, costumes for shepherds and kings and finds unique ways to bring the stories right into the palm of her audience’s hands!

The children are drawn into the performance by creating waves of water, becoming a royal army, discovering clever ways to hide their dancing fairies and organising a troublesome troop of monkeys.

February – Half Term week Saturday 13th to Sunday 21st – Fully open (Castle closed Saturdays) Description - Let the kids explore and play in 70 acres of gardens, visit this beautiful historic Castle, home to the Pennington family for 800 years, and on selected dates experience the magic of Darkest Muncaster Illuminations after dark as we transform the gardens with music and sound effects and a light and sound show on the Castle. April/May – Feast of Flowers Friday 30th April to Monday 3rd May inclusive – Description - A weekend to celebrate Muncaster’s spectacular rhododendrons and azaleas at their best! A riot of colour throughout the 70 acres of gardens.  This famous collection is home to some of the rarest rhododendrons in the world.  RHS guided walk on Friday 30th bookings via Muncaster and RHS. There will be guided walk’s available with the Owner or Head Gardener, giving the enthusiast a chance to learn more on Saturday, Sunday and Monday FOC (see website for times) Flower arranging demonstrations and various displays will be taking place throughout the weekend in the Castle by Millom Flower Club.  Celebrity chef John Crouch will be here on Sunday and Monday with ‘cooking with flowers’ demonstrations at 1.30pm and 3.30pm

May/June – Festival of Fools Sunday 30th May to Thursday 3rd June inclusive – Description – The most Foolish Event of its kind! 5 Days of madness and mayhem as Jesters, Street entertainers and various colourful characters surround the Castle with much Tomfoolery! The Festival culminates with the International Jesters Tournament held on the final day when the Fool of Muncaster 2010 will be appointed from a cast of foolish hopefuls. Fair with children’s activities; face painting, side shows, and daily circus workshops for children of all ages. Bar and BBQ available.

August – Summer of Fun – everyday in August – Description - Keep the kids entertained this summer! Something for everyone, every day in August!   Let the kids run wild in 70 acres, plus daily events such as a circus workshop and/or magic show.  On selected dates a chance to see a Fool of Muncaster past or present perform.

August Bank Holiday – 28th – 30th August 2010 -Medieval Muncaster – Description -Part of our ‘Summer of Fun’ in August, we’re turning the clock back to the medieval era here at Muncaster Castle! The Red Wyvern Society Medieval re-enactment group will be camped in the gardens with displays and demonstrations of life in medieval times, including armory, cooking and battle re-enactments!  Experience living history with fun and festivities all weekend! 

October – Halloween Week Sunday 24th to Sunday 31st – Description - Dare you visit one of Britain’s most haunted castle’s this Halloween? Ghost tours of this famously haunted castle sell out every year! (Pre booking), Dare you enter the Ghostly Grotto? Daily children’s activities include, face painting, crafts, games, magic show and talks on Halloween traditions.  Darkest Muncaster illuminations with a themed sound and light show on the Castle, sound effects and music transform the gardens after dark, with our special guest fire juggler, included in day ticket price. For the adrenaline junkie, optional tours can be booked on the night - try our Ghostly Garden walks into unlit areas of Muncaster? Dare to take on the Scary Maze? Or a Mysterious Owl tour? December – Victorian Christmas tours Sundays in December (except 26th) plus 27th to 29th inclusive – description - Experience the magic of this beautiful, ancient castle, lit by candle light and elegantly decorated for Christmas.  While Lord Muncaster sleeps, sneak a peek behind the scenes, tall tails over a glass of his lordships mulled wine and enjoy a mince pie on this inclusive ½ hour tour. Guided by servants in period costume from 1885. Pre booking is essential. Halloween Castle ghost tours: Halloween prices are £6.00 per person for a tour ‘on the door’ with early bird offer of £5 per person  from 1st June – 31st August with tickets going on sale on 1st June.  (Prices are additional to normal admission).

Victorian Christmas tours: Victorian tour prices are £7.50 per person ‘on the door’ with an early bird offer of £6.50 per person from 1st October until 20th November.

The Lakelander - Vintage Steam Train Journey - Selected Saturdays from May until August
Enjoy a memorable day on board a vintage steam hauled train, running on Sat 29th May, Sat 19th June, Sat 17th July and Sat 7th August from various departure stations around the country.  Travel around the Cumbrian Coast to Ravenglass where there is an opportunity to visit Muncaster Castle at a special discounted rate.  We will provide a shuttle service from Ravenglass station to the Castle.  Please note the Castle is closed on Saturdays except 29th May when there will be free admission to Lakelander passengers.

This popular festival had outgrown its original site and moved to a new venue on a stunning site under the Howgill Fells at Sedbergh. Following the success of the 2009 festival it was decided to change its name to better reflect where the festival is now held. The festival is still organised by the same dedicated team.
